The Great Spotted Woodpecker has continued its dramatic range expansion in Ireland and now occurs in all counties. Records submitted to the National Biodiversity Data Centre show it is extremely widespread in Leinster, has colonised much of the border counties and continues to extend its range westward, though it is still relatively scarce west of the Shannon.
