Only five months of recording remain before the data collection phase of the Atlas of Mammals in Ireland 2010-2015 ends. The Atlas of Mammals in Ireland project is an ambitious collaborative project which brings together mammal sightings into a single database to enable the production of distribution maps of all Ireland’s wild and feral mammal species. This includes both terrestrial and marine mammals recording on the island of Ireland and its marine waters. Thanks to the support of our partners, which includes NPWS, Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, Bat Conservation Ireland, CEDaR (N. Ireland), Biology.ie, and Ireland’s leading mammal experts, the database now contains over 117,000 records of 67 species (see table below). These data also include thousands of mammal sightings that have been submitted directly to the National Biodiversity Data Centre from citizen scientists, using the special on-line record submission form. So for this year, almost 500 records per month have been generate in this way, which is a very high level of recording for mammals.
The collection of mammal sightings will continue to the end of the year, so please submit details of any wild mammal seen. Work will then commence on the production of a hard copy Atlas, which is due for publication at the end of 2016 or early 2017.
