The National Biodiversity Data Centre is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for a highly motivated person to contribute to the work of the Centre in 2015. The post provides a suitable candidate with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in working in a leading biodiversity Data Centre, learning about all aspects of biological recording, data management and biodiversity training, while contributing in a real way to increasing our knowledge base on Ireland’s biodiversity.

Invasive Species Data Assistant

The JobBridge Internship will be structured to enable the successful candidate gain a rich learning experience by working with different staff of the Data Centre on different work areas. The focus of this year’s internship will be to provide the successful applicant with detailed training in researching European and international databases and grey literature for pertinent information on invasive species. The compiled information will be entered into an online species profile system and form a valuable element of species assessment.

Other key work areas will include providing support for sampling Irish river vegetation, sourcing and digitising important historical records for the Atlas of Mammals in Ireland project, assisting the production of the Data Centre’s identification guides, production of material for promoting conservation of pollinators and assisting with management of some of the Data Centre’s national databases.

A clear mentoring and supervisory structure will be provided to ensure that the Intern derives maximum benefit from the internship

The successful candidate will be provided with, specifically:

  • a deep insight into all aspects of the management of biodiversity data,
  • experience of project management in a dynamic work environment,
  • training in the use of the online invasive and non-native species profile entry system,
  • training in invasive species identification,
  • training in field identification of aquatic flora and vegetation,
  • high quality training in the WordPress website content management system,
  • training in monitoring programmes run by the Centre,
  • opportunity to attend the extensive programme of training workshops for 2015,
  • participation in the many field outings and other events organised by the Data Centre.

The position is suited to candidates with training in the natural sciences and knowledge of biodiversity data. The internship will be for 9 months duration and based at the National Biodiversity Data Centre in Waterford but the post will involve a significant amount of fieldwork and travel. Candidates should have an interest in biodiversity, good attention to detail, good computer skills, and be able to work as part of a team. The internship will work closely with the Centre’s ecologists to provide guidance and support in the delivery of the work programme. Please note that as this post will involve a significant amount of fieldwork and travel a driver’s licence is desirable.
