The National Biodiversity Data Centre and the National Parks and Wildlife Service recently attended the 33rd meeting of the Governing Board of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) in Oslo. GBIF is the international biodiversity data infrastructure and network, funded by the world’s governments and aimed at providing anyone, anywhere, with open access to data about all types of life on Earth. The National Biodiversity Data Centre serves as Ireland’s National Node to GBIF, and has published 4.6 million biodiversity records from Ireland on this international data portal.
The Norway meeting was significant as it celebrated 25 years of GBIF and saw Liam Lysaght, CEO, of the National Biodiversity Data Centre, finish his second term as Chair of the Governing Board of GBIF, having served in that role for four years.
