The National Biodiversity Data Centre is running the ‘Backyard Biodiversity’ project to record distinctive species commonly found in gardens. The project seeks to obtain sightings of 20 recognisable species that can be found in urban and rural gardens, and is focused on those people who are new to biodiversity recording.

The project will be launching at the start of Heritage Week (13/08/2022), so why not get involved and see if any of our 20 chosen species are in your garden or back yard. The list of species can be found on our project webpagehttps://biodiversityireland.ie/backyard-biodiversity-species/) along with all other information about the project: https://biodiversityireland.ie/surveys/backyard-biodiversity/
The aim of this project is to get people to investigate the biodiversity in their own gardens, to encourage people to connect with nature and get involved with biological recording. You don’t have to have any previous experience to start recording, we have resources for learning, including spotter sheets in Irish and English and will also be posting regularly throughout the week with other identification tips.

The chosen species are a mix of vertebrates and invertebrates, from different taxonomic groups. Each of the species can be relatively easily identified, provided that key identification features are carefully noted. All records can be submitted through our dedicated online recording form: Backyard Biodiversity Recording Form
Why not see how many of our 20 backyard biodiversity species are in your garden or area and use #BackyardBiodiversity on social media.
